The Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) is ERDC’s premier center for developing technologies that provide high-quality facilities and realistic training lands to the Department of Defense (DoD). Co-located with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Champaign, Illinois, and with facilities across the country, CERL is a multidisciplinary team of more than 300 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel working together to take groundbreaking research projects from start to finish.
The Work
CERL’s work centers on military installations, contingency bases, sustainable training lands, and support to civil works. One of the goals of CERL’s research is to increase the Army’s ability to design, construct, operate, and maintain its installations and contingency bases more efficiently. CERL works to maintain these installations and contingency bases’ environmental quality and safety while reducing their life-cycle costs and focusing on enhancing the public’s understanding of military operations and improving civil works infrastructure. Research areas include:
