About this Event

The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), in partnership with U.S. Navy Third Fleet, and Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Pacific, is running a Prize Challenge to identify new hardware and software technologies that can support high-bandwidth underwater communications.

In many maritime communications applications, it is not feasible to use a surface buoy with an antenna. Communicating underwater is a challenge due to the physics of the medium. Sound generally attenuates within 1-2 kilometers depending on factors such as sound frequency and water temperature, depth, salinity, and transmission power. The Challenge Pitch Event seeks new hardware and software technologies that can support high bandwidth underwater communications, real-time signal processing, and error correction and information compression.

A team of subject matter experts has evaluated applicants and selected the most promising applicants to participate as finalists in this virtual pitch day. A total of $150,000 in awards will be available for the top performers in the pitch event.
