WASHINGTON, DC (March 9, 2020) —

The National Security Innovation Network (NSIN), a Department of Defense program, announced, today, its next hackathon. “Seeing into the Unknown – A hackathon exploring situational awareness in dense urban environments,” is slated for the weekend of April 24-26, 2020 at the New York University Center for Urban Science and Progress in Brooklyn, NY.

The event will bring together students, academics, entrepreneurs, technologists, developers, industry partners and local, state, and federal government personnel to conceptualize solutions to the challenge of achieving situational awareness in dense urban environments in response to disasters and conflicts.

The hackathon challenge will focus on developing novel solutions for sensing, mapping, and understanding interior spaces, both above and below ground. Participants will be tasked to develop innovative concepts that allow first responders and military operators to understand, at a moment’s notice, what is going on inside buildings and subterranean spaces.

The following four focus areas imbedded in this hackathon challenge articulate the major needs:

  • Sense Physical Characteristics – Understanding the geometry and content of interior spaces
  • Sense Activity – Detecting and characterizing occupants and assessing activity
  • Deliver Data – Timely transmission of data in usable formats
  • Display Information – Presenting actionable information to responders, operators, and decision makers
